Description: One of our top 10 richest marine areas, the BMT contains diverse and extensive reefs whose coral cover has been rated as good to excellent. Conservation importance thus also ranks high for this area, as 11 of the 22 known species of Philippine marine mammals and three of the world’s seven sea turtle species, among other notable marine life, have been seen here.

Biogeographic Features

  • It contains diverse and extensive coral reefs with good to excellent coral cover

  • The sea surronding the BMT is also known as migration routh as well as habitat for whales and dolphins.

     

Flora

  • BMt is also known for its wide variety of seashells, including the rare cone shell Conus gloriamaris and several rare cowries like Cyprea guttata and Cyprea valencia.

Fauna

  • Eleven of the known species of marine mammals in the Philippines have been sighted in the area.

  • Out of the world's eight species of the sea turtles, have been observed here - all classified as endangered - namely, the Green sea-turtle (Chelonia mydas), Olive-ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) and the Hawksbill turtle (Erethmochelys imbricata)

  • Several migratory bird species have been observed here including the critically endangered Chinese egret (Egretta eulophotes) and Asian-golden plover (Pluvialis fulva)
