Description: The Paranas Forests found within the Samar Island Natural Park have exhibited encouraging recovery from commercial logging from previous decades and boasts a relatively large, unfragmented tract of lowland tropical rainforest. This good news is further supplemented by FPE’s involvement by way of support for local community-based forest management capacity-building interventions.

Area

347, 000 hectares

Biogeographic Features

  • Holds the distinction of having s relatively large - about 360,000 hectares - unfragmented tract of lowland tropical rainforest.

Flora

  • Host to 40 species of flowering plants which are found only in the island. These include the second-largest flowering plant in the world - which has so far been recorded only in Samar and in four other localities in the country - the rare Rafflesia manillana and an endemic pandan palm, Saranga philippineis

Fauna

  • Had been designated as an Endemic bBird Area for its rich and unique avifauna

  • Several of these are highly threatened such as the Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi), Philippine Hawk-eagle (Spizaetus philippensis) and the Philippine Cockatoo (Cacatua haematuropygia).

  • Samar Island has one of the highest known populations of the Philippine Eagle in the whole country

Livelihood Resources

  • Logging - which has been a major threat to biodiversity along with kaingin
